Every Studio 5 cutting board begins long before it reaches the workshop.
Some trees spend decades—even generations—standing through changing seasons, providing shade, carrying water from their roots to their highest branches, and quietly becoming part of the landscapes and memories around them. Every handcrafted cutting board gives that story a new purpose, transforming a remarkable tree into something that will be used, admired, and passed down for years to come.
Each board is handcrafted from solid hardwood in Guelph, Ontario and built to order using a traditional end-grain construction that's as beautiful as it is durable.

Why End Grain?

You're not looking at the side of the wood—you're looking into the tree itself.
Every square in an end-grain cutting board is the end of thousands of wood fibers that once carried water through the tree. By turning those fibers upward, your knife cuts between them instead of across them.
The result is a cutting surface that:
✔ Is gentler on knife edges
✔ Resists deep knife marks (sharper the knife the better)
✔ Naturally recovers from everyday use
✔ Will provide decades of service with proper care

Built Twice. Made to Last.
Unlike ordinary cutting boards, every Studio 5 end-grain board is built twice.
First, rough hardwood is flattened, jointed, planed, and glued into a perfectly flat long-grain panel.
That panel is then drum sanded, crosscut into individual sections, every piece is rotated onto its end grain, carefully arranged, and glued together a second time to create the signature checkerboard pattern.
The board is flattened again, hand-routed, progressively sanded, saturated in mineral oil, polished with beeswax, and fitted with rubber feet before it ever reaches your kitchen.
It's a time-consuming process—but it's what creates a board built to last for generations.

🪵 Choose Your Wood

Walnut ⭐ Most Popular — Rich, dark chocolate tones.

Rustic Maple — Hard Maple
Hard maple with natural character, grain variation and occasional knots. Built for heavy daily use with a warm, authentic appearance Our Maple Boards are not the pale white character free boards

Cherry — Warm reddish-amber tones that deepen beautifully with age.

White Oak — Distinctive ray fleck end grain pattern unique to oak

Hickory — The most dramatic grain of any wood we offer.

Teak — A rare offering. Naturally oily, teak is one of the most water-resistant hardwoods in the world

How Every Board Is Finished
Most cutting boards receive a quick coat of oil before shipping.
Ours don't.
Every board is:
✔ Sanded smooth before finishing
✔ Fully submerged in food-grade white mineral oil for a minimum of seven days until the wood reaches full saturation
✔ Hand polished after oiling
✔ Finished with Clapham's Salad Bowl Beeswax
✔ Fitted with rubber feet for airflow, stability and easier lifting
Your board arrives ready to use and fully protected.
Board Care
Leave the beeswax finish in place for approximately 48 hours after delivery while the board acclimates to your home.
Reapply food-grade mineral oil every 1–3 months depending on use.
A properly maintained end-grain cutting board can last for decades—and often becomes something that's passed from one generation to the next.

Why End Grain?

  • Surface is self-healing — knife marks close up over time
  • Gentler on knife edges than face grain or plastic
  • Absorbs and releases moisture evenly — won't warp
