Handcrafted Furniture Process
Project Planning

Custom projects begin with detailed planning. We create drawings, layouts and, cut lists, so we can determine the material requirements and time required to complete the project
Lumber Selection

At the lumber supplier, we hand-select premium hardwoods, examining each board for grain pattern, color, and quality to ensure the best materials for your project.
The many steps in producing uniform wood planks from rough lumber

Back in the shop, we carefully inspect each board for defects, warping, and grain characteristics to plan the optimal use of every piece.
Cut Lumber to Length

Using our miter saw, we cut lumber to rough lengths, breaking down larger boards into manageable pieces for further processing.
Flattening Rough Lumber

The jointer/planner removes the natural warping and twisting in a rough cut board creating one flat surface on one edge and one side of a board which will then be used as a perfectly flat reference edge required for the next step, thickness planning
Thickness Planning

When we start with a piece of rough lumber it may be 1-1/8" thick and by the time we put it through the planners it will likely be close to 3/4" taking out all the warping and twisting, the thickness planner allows us to do this creating the same flat edges on each side while creating an equal uniform thickness dimension over the length of the board, of course raw lumber is very prone to internal tensions and can continue to adjust to its new dimensions so this process may go on for a bit until it stops warping and twisting
Cutting the wood to the proper widths

Cutting Joinery - Dado Joints, Mortise & Tenon

Traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon, and dado joints are precisely cut to create strong, lasting connections that will endure for generations.
Drum Sanding

Our drum sander creates smooth, consistent surfaces while maintaining exact dimensions, preparing wood for final sanding and assembly.
Router Work - Edge Details

Custom edge profiles and details are created with hand and table router setups, adding the finishing touches.
Orbital Sanding

Final surface preparation using many passes with different sandpaper grits using a professional orbital sander which removes all additional scratches that are on the surface of the wood with dust-free operation ensures every surface is perfectly smooth and ready for assembly.
Gluing and Assembly

Precise assembly brings together all the carefully crafted components using traditional joinery and modern adhesives for maximum strength and longevity.
Staining/Topcoat

Hand-applied stains and protective topcoats enhance the natural beauty of the wood while providing lasting protection and durability.
